Ninety-six of us braved a day without the slightest hint of a breeze and temps in the mid 90’s on a course with very limited shade to put together some pretty good golf. Now I know that temps in the mid 90’s is actually sweater weather for St. Louis after the last two weeks during which time I basked in what some people might think are near frigid temperatures in Minnesota. Let me assure you that where I was in Minnesota suffered under some temperatures not all that dissimilar to those witnessed here. I played some golf there (west central part of the state) and each day that I played the temps were in the mid 90’s with a modicum of humidity. I realize I wasn’t playing in the triple-digit heat but at least I did break a sweat.

Today Aberdeen gave us the best conditions I’ve ever seen for this course. The fairways were immaculate and the greens were in very, very good shape. They might’ve been a touch on the fuzzy side but they did roll true and even gave our team a few lucky putts. Someone commented that they’ve been dumping a lot of water on the course, which was quite evident, providing the customer with a quite lush appearing place on which to play. It’s amazing there’s still water in the Meramec as much as they’ve been using on Aberdeen.

A Flight

In first place by virtue of winning a playoff beginning on hole #10 was the Ed de la Peña team of Steve Dierker, Tom Murphy, and John Boyd. Probably picked to finish in first by all the bookies in the crowd, these guys didn’t disappoint, although they had to go to the playoff procedure to squeak in. Congrats guys. Oh, one other comment, they also had the ultimate ringer on their team – Mr. Murphy. He also tore up Wolf Hollow the day before so he came into today loaded for the proverbial bear and according to a trusted source, he lived up to his reputation. By the way, these guys scorched the course with a -11.

Sneaking into second place was the Charlie Riedisser squad which included a Jeff (Delaplain) and a Jefts, Duane. Helping out was Lee Hanson. These guys also shot -11 but because of the randomly picked scorecard playoff hole, they got edged out for top honors.

Solidly in third place with the same score but shoved down the payoff ladder because of the scorecard playoff, was the Jack Eckhard, Mike Rutherford, Dennis Terhaar and Darryl Rue team.

B Flight

In first place because of another scorecard playoff was the John Hessler team. He made sure the rest of us; Doug Nolte, John Prather, and Dan Ottoline stayed focused enough to come up with a sparkling -9. Dan is probably one of the most sought after free agents because of his prodigious length off the front tees. He sure doesn’t look 75 but far be it from us to challenge his age when he bumps the ball down the fairway as far as he did today.

Shooting the same score but getting nudged out because of the scorecard playoff was the Ted Isringhaus, Bob Brewer, Harold Howard and Rich Graeff team. Harold is always dangerous on the par 3’s and I imagine he was his usual accurate self with these relatively short holes today. I’d say more about Graeff’s valuable addition to the team but I’d be wasting email space because Rich somehow gets along in today’s world without a computer.

Also with a -9 was the Joe McDaniels, Art Soble, Joe Cernich, and Ed Bronczyk team.

C Flight

Carding a very nice -8 and finishing first in the scorecard playoff was the Ted Schuessler, Dan Fergus, Joe Jarvis and Bert Schott team.

Shooting the same score was the Joe Roeder, Wayne Warneke, Frank Vien, and Bob Pahmeier team.

Also with the same score but on the shortest end of the scorecard playoff was the Ernie South, Larry Riedisser, Bob Edwards and Bob Pankey team.

D Flight

Winning the D Flight with a -3 score was the Pat Reed, Charley Wilson, Bob Eddy, and Del Lohmann squad. Like a broken record this was also a scorecard playoff win.

Finishing second in the scorecard sweepstakes with the identical score was the Don Bartoni, John Ross, Bob Kriss and Don Wulf team.

And bringing up the tail in the scorecard business was the Bob Thibodeaux, Jack Panula, Dennis Swift, and Dan Snowden foursome who also shot the 3 under 69.

Awards;

Closest to the pins for the day; #3 Wayne Warneke #5 Ron Krick #11 Ernie South #16 Mark Gordon

Skins:Just one and it was recorded on #17 with an eagle by the Jack Eckhard team. I understand that Jack should get the whole enchilada on this because those were all 3 of his shots. But he’s such a great guy that he split it amongst his teammates. Whatta guy
