Eighty-four of us made the trek to Wood River’s Belk Park to tee it up on their municipal golf course that’s always had good ratings from the local golf gurus. The course didn’t disappoint as the fairways and greens were in very good shape. The greens, though a bit pock-marked from ill-repaired ball marks, and a tad slow because of being allowed to grow in this heat, ran quite true

From a personal standpoint my putts were all unbelievably true and many were headed right for the center of the hole only to stop a few inches short, which unnerved my teammates no end. Fortunately on several holes at least one of the guys putting after me trusted my line and dumped the ball where it was supposed to be, in the bottom of the cup. But to be consistently short all day gave me a bit of a complex. I was concerned that I might be referred to as “short” for the rest of my ACS golf career. Ask one Larry Willman about that.

Fortunately for us the weather held out and we only suffered some overpowering heat when the sun appeared for the last few holes. But the breezes helped and the mid 90’s temps didn’t feel too bad. Winter must be just around the corner, eh?
