One hundred and seven of us found our way to far out of the way Far Oaks on what turned into a pretty nice day in spite of our usual 90+ degree temps. I don't think a single person accidentally went to The Falls by mistake, which was of course originally scheduled for this day. I know at least one person who was still under the impression we were playing at the Falls but he listened to the email of reason and showed up in plenty of time at Far Oaks to play with his assigned team. Congrats to you, Mr. Anonymous.

The fairways at Far Oaks were superb and even the rough was in very good condition, at least the rough we managed to find. For this Ernie South was forever grateful because he just loves the "tees" that a good rough affords. Had they been any longer we would've had some problems, but these suited Ernie just fine. But even the fairways gave a semblance of the "tee" that Ernie prefers and we found we could hit off the fairway just as easily.

The greens were a different story. They did run very true but they were a mess. Many of the numb-nuts that had played the course before we arrived had decided to either overlook their ball marks, or needed a lot of remedial training on how to repair a green ball mark. These things looked like miniature mine fields, and even those marks that had been attended too looked pretty lousy. We spent as much time repairing old marks as we did putting. Granted, the greens were exceptionally soft but still there were a lot of old craters on their surfaces and a lot of bare spots were ball marks had been sloppily repaired.

The course yielded some low scores and some not-so-low, but overall we didn't embarrass ourselves out there.

Results:

Flight "A"Finishing in first place by virtue of the good old scorecard playoff (beginning on hole #7) and posting a very good score of -11 was the Charlie "The" Pope, Mark Bryant, Don "Motorcycle" Moschenross, and Bob Dixon team. They edged out the Wayne Lamborn, Ed de la Peña, Lowell Barnes and Dave Rapp squad. We followed the Pope entourage around the course and other than Mark Bryant's heroics on the par 3's it seemed they were always scrambling to make par on many of these holes. Where were the miracles Charlie?

In third place was the Doug Torrie, Joe McDaniels, Charlie Riedisser, and Gary Turner team at a -9. Also at a -9 were the Bob Meinhardt and Bob Gay teams but they fell victim to the playoff hole. Bringing up the rear in the A flight with a -8 was the John Boyd team.

Flight "B"In first place, edging out most of the field because of the scorecard playoff, was the Bob Pahmeier, Harold Howard, Tom Murphy, and Bob Thibodeaux team who recorded a 7 under 65. They beat out the Bob Franke, Bill Wegge, Larry Knopfel, and Dan Fergus team and the Don Giarraffa, Dan Snowden, Al Rosenberg, and Dan Ottoline team who also carded the 65 scores.

The Fred McGavran and Bob Day teams also shot the 65 scores but were eliminated by the scorecard playoff.

Falling out of the 65 score range, but still in the B flight were the John Hessler, Harry Trammel, and Lou Pessoni teams who all shot 66's.

Flight "C"In first place with a 67, and winning the scorecard playoff, was the Dennis O'Connor, John Ross, Bert Schott, and Sam Huston team. These guys beat out the Joe Goines, Larry Lachalmelle, Casey Szpak, and Bob Foeller team, who in turn beat out the Paul Villhard, Don Bartoni, Darryl Rue, and Bob Kriss team, who all shot the 67 score.

In with 68's were the Wayne Warneke, Phil Lucido, Dennis Terhaar, John Prather, and Ted Isringhaus team.

Flight "D"Winning this flight with a 69 and again a scorecard playoff was the Russ Wall, Ted Schuessler, Jim Mead, and Rick Palloni team. They nosed out the Paul Rivard, John Tipton, Ron Maniscalco, and Jerry Mullen team who managed the same score.

Two shots back of those teams came the Charley Wilson, Don Schmidt, Larry Willman, and Bob Stephenson team with a 71.

Also with a 71 but drawing the short straw under the scorecard playoff format was the Pierre Sans Souci team.

And finally, managing a one over par for the day was the Mark Gordon team which was handsomely rewarded for their efforts.
