One hundred and six of us filed into the Spencer T. Olin golf complex on the northeast side of Alton. The weather was great and the course was in excellent condition. The fairways were some of the best we’ve seen so far this season and the greens were superb. The maintenance crew at the course needs to be congratulated for their efforts.

We wish we could say the same for the way we were treated for the day. Fielding that many golfers you would think we’d get the full course for a shotgun start to make things run smoothly. Not so. We got 14 out of 18 holes on which to start 27 teams. We knew from the beginning that we were in for a long day and sure enough we weren’t disappointed in that respect. My team was the first one back to the pavilion and we arrived just after 1:00PM, making it almost a 5 1/2 hour outing. As most of you experienced, we also had to wait on every hole. Not a joyful experience, but one that could have been improved had we received a full shotgun start, something we get at most courses that we play. The only saving grace for the course was the fine meal they dished out to us after play.

Results:

One team in first with a -9. was the Ron Muse, Jerry Mullen, Charlie Riedisser, and Earl Phillips team. They got around this challenging layout using only 63 strokes, or actually a maximum of 252 when you think of it. A -9 is quite good for this course, at least in my estimation. Very good playing gentlemen.

Two teams tied for second place at a -7. The Pratt and Pope teams. Mr. Pratt, whose name seems to have been dormant in the winner’s circle for a while, had the help of Russ Wall, Bob Kriss, and Dennis Dummeyer. Charlie “The” Pope used Ted Isringhaus, Ernie South, and Bert Schott to his advantage. I should’ve known this squad would be up there in the standings. Talk about a stacked foursome, whew. A real team of heavy hitters there.

The thrid place team, at -6,Mr. Mike Rutherford made sure that Joe Cernich, Harold Howard and Casey Szpak followed his direction and found the cup(s) with steady resolve.

One team finished fourth at -5, The John Boyd team.

Four teams finished fifth at -4, 1. The Paul Rivard team. 2. The Chops Adams team. 3. The Ed de la Peña team. 4. The Pal Pals team.

A special note here; Chops’ team, according to them, birdied number 8, that long par 3, accidentally wrote down a 3 and then circled it like a birdie, the whole time thinking the number was a 2 they proceeded to add a 2 in totaling the front 9. Had they actually written down the 2 it would’ve cancelled out the only skin for the day. Sorry for using the story Chops but it illustrates for all of us the importance of putting the right number in the slot for that hole. Yours was not the only team that did this for the day. Your team wrote down a 68 for the day, although the scorecard really reflects a 69, but you are so trustworthy we’ll credit you with a 68, how about that?

Five teams finished sixth at -3, 1. The Duane Jefts team. 2. The Joe McDaniels team. 3. The Bob Lafoy team. 4. The Doug Nolte team. 5. The Dennis O’Connor team.

Another note; The Doug Nolte team got a thrill to see Dale Bruce’s shot on #12 come within about 2” of the cup for a near hole-in-one

Three teams finished seventh at -2, 1. The Del Lohmann team. 2. The Darryl Rue team. 3. The Rick Palloni team

Four teams finished eighth at -1, 1. The John Prather team. 2. The Phil Lucido team. 3. The Art Soble team. 4. The Dan Snowden team

Another footnote here: I forgot to check this through Phil Lucido but it seems his team was spotted practicing on the adjacent par 3 course just before we teed off. Did it help Phil? No offense meant, just curious.

Lots of teams toiled quite hard for the 5+ hours only to come up with a big smackeroo from their sisters and shoot even par. 1. The Jack Eckhard team. 2. The Bob Franke team. 3. The John Dierker team. 4. The Joe Jarvis team.

One team finished with a +1 for the day. 1. The Bill Emrick team.

One team got the most practice of anyone with a +2 for the day. 1. The Bob Edwards team.

Awards;

Closest to the pins for the day; #5 Steve Dierker #8 Dennis Dummeyer #12 Dale Bruce (so close Dale, so close) #16 Bob Lafoy

Skins: Hole #8 The Art Soble team
