A final count of 87 of us gathered at Jack Nicklaus' gem on the east side. The threat of a possible shower and sloppy conditions from rain the previous day evidently changed some minds about playing because we had upwards of 10 cancellations for the day. However, those that decided not to play missed what turned into a wonderful day for golf. We had virtually no wind, no rain, no harsh sun, and to top it all off, the course decided to let us drive on the fairways. One of our elderly players, who originally cancelled because of impending restrictions on the use of carts, called the course in the morning to find that we could drive the fairways and he showed up at the last minute, much to our pleasure because we were running short of talent for the day.

As it turned out, the course was in fine shape. The fairways, mainly zoysia, were just on the verge of turning dormant for the season but were still easily playable. The greens were cut a tad long but still ran quite true and even on the quick side. It was actually amazing that they did allow us to go off the cart paths because some areas were definitely on the squishy side, but careful driving allowed us to make minimal impressions in the softer areas.

Results:

Flight "A"-Larry Willman, Ed de la Pena, Jim Waugh, and Bob Haddad team. These guys scorched the course in a -10 fashion thanks probably in most part to Mr. de la Pena who's been taking advantage of his advanced age and the red tees. I'm sure it didn't hurt to have Larry Willman on the team who seems to have winning ways coursing through his veins. Congrats on a nice round guys.

Two strokes back at a 63 was the Paul Villhard, John Prather, and Harry Trammel team. Letting Mr. Prather hit twice per shot on every third hole is tough enough on the rest of the field but to have a short range sharp shooter like Harry "the hat" Trammel in your mix, well that's enough to slam the door on the rest of us grizzled competitors. I'm sure Paul contributed just as well. Great shootin' guys.

Just out of reach of the Villhard bunch, but winning over three other teams in the scorecard playoff with a 64 (beginning on hole #12 by the way) was another threesome - the Larry Riedisser, Jack Eckhard, and Frank Vien team.

The three other teams at 64 were the Steve Dierker team, the Bill Heidbreder team, and the Dennis O'Connor team.

Flight "B"-Two teams vied for first in this flight with a score of 65, or a -6. The John Dierker, George Keil, Alex Horvat, and Jim Hawkes team nosed out the Tom Murphy, Charlie Riedisser, Bob Gay and Doug Torrie team.

Behind them at a -5, and winning third place in a 4-team scorecard playoff was the Ted Isringhaus, Bob Thibodeaux, Phil Hess, and Vince Koehr team. Also with the 5 under but not a low enough score on hole #12 were the Jeff Delaplain and Lee Hanson teams.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flight "C"-Five teams all shot a -4 for the day (67), but the team that won the scorecard playoff for first place was the Duane Jefts, Joe McDaniels, Wayne Lamborn and Roger Hennen team. They beat out the Harvey Ruth, Charley Wilson, Rich Graeff, and Dennis Terhaar team who in turn beat out the Harold Howard, Doug Nolte, Darryl Rue, and Jerry Mullen team.

The Randy Pratt and Ron Muse teams also shot four under but lost out in the scorecard playoff.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flight "D"-Three teams tied for first with a -3 (68) score but the Bob Franke, Pierre Sans Souci, Lowell Barnes, and Don Giarraffa team came out on top of the Dan Snowden, Karson Kosowski, Gary Turner, and Bob Kriss team, and the Tom Wulf, Bob Brewer, Dee Ridenhour, and Bob Edwards team.

Following up with a 70 (-1) were the Wayne Warneke and Joe Cernich teams.

Ernie South's team shot even par 71 for the day.
