From possibly the flattest course we play (Gateway National) to by far the hilliest course we play (Wolf Hollow) this group certainly showed its resiliency and ability to play under all topographical conditions. And just think, we get to go back to the plains (Gateway National) and do at least half of the exercise all over again next week! For those of you interested, 116 of us endured at least 175 feet of elevation change, just barely avoiding the need for oxygen masks as we plied our way up the fairway at #11. Gateway National probably boasts at most a 6 foot elevation change from lowest to highest point on the course. Not enough to break a sweat, especially in a cart, right?

Just to let you know guys, a bunch of us play Wolf Hollow on Wednesdays in a 2-person scramble and occasionally one of the teams is comprised of 2 women. One of these women WALKS this course while her partner drives the cart. She says it's no problem, she and her husband quail hunt and they might walk 10 miles on an outing just to find the elusive birds!

Another interesting tidbit about Wolf Hollow. On Wednesday our own Charley Wilson and Paul Rivard teamed up in the two man, excuse me, two person scramble and fashioned an amazing -7 score. I've seen lower scores than this in the 2 man person scramble at Wolf Hollow but not by men in our age bracket. Evidently miracles were on their side on Wednesday. But, but, Charley and his elite team on Thursday shot an extremely respectable -11, so the course is tamable. Me thinks Charley might begin to like Wolf Hollow. And just to show you that this course is hard but manageable, there was only one team over par for the day, quite an accomplishment for this course and for this group.

I mentioned to the course manager that I thought the fairways were the best I've seen them ever be and probably the best of any course we've played this year (but I've missed some outings so what do I know). Anyway, the fairways were gorgeous allowing at least part of the iron face to get below the ball to impart some fashion of back spin, for those of you guys who know how to do this!

The rough was ok, nothing special, but the greens were a different story. And the manager acknowledges this. They're in the process of almost losing some to the excessive heat and what goes along with it, plus the ever present crab grass. Whatever poison they've been applying to the crab grass has been very effective but it leaves almost a star wars look to the green surface what with the white appearance of the dead spots of crab grass amongst the green of the green. Fortunately, the dead crab grass remnants didn't seem to affect the roll of the ball and let me say this about Wolf Hollow, the ball will roll on these greens, and off the green if you're not careful. It's always been a haven for difficult putting and it didn't let us down yesterday.

Just one other thing before the results, thanks to everyone for being prompt at the end of the outing. We accomplished the agonizing job of tabulating the results and were out of there at or before 1:30, a great feat in itself. And, everyone tabulated their scores to perfection. The computer didn't catch one adding error all day - very good guys, keep it up.

Results: Oh yeah, the playoff hole was #7, the semi long uphill par 4 just outside the clubhouse.
